Singapore breaks a 13-hour flight into two manageable ones, and it’s the easiest major city in the world to arrive in — spotless, English-speaking, walkable, safe at any hour. Bali follows two and a half hours later and is a completely different planet.

Why Singapore first
Singapore is eight hours ahead of the UK and you’ll arrive scrambled. It happens to be the best possible place to be scrambled: everything works, nothing is difficult, and there’s air conditioning wherever you look. Three nights and you’ll have adjusted.
The other reason is the ending. Bali is where you want to be when you’re tired — the villa, the pool, the slow mornings. Finishing in Ubud or Seminyak and flying home from there beats the reverse, where you’d land in Singapore sunburnt and immediately have to walk around a city.
Three nights in Singapore: what to actually do
Singapore rewards a short, dense visit. Three nights is right; five and you’ll run out.
Day one. Arrive, check in, and go to Gardens by the Bay for the evening. The Supertree light show at 7.45pm and 8.45pm is free and genuinely worth turning up for. Eat at a hawker centre — Lau Pa Sat or Maxwell — where a superb meal costs £4.
Day two. Morning in Chinatown and the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, then Little India and Kampong Glam for the Sultan Mosque and the shophouses on Haji Lane. Afternoon at the Botanic Gardens or the National Gallery. Evening on the Marina Bay waterfront.
Day three. Either Sentosa if you have children, or a slow morning followed by the Singapore River and Clarke Quay. If you’re going to do the Marina Bay Sands infinity pool photograph, you have to be staying there — otherwise the observation deck gives you the same view for a fraction of the price.
Practical notes. The MRT is cheap, air-conditioned and goes everywhere; you will not need taxis. Chewing gum is genuinely restricted and littering fines are genuinely enforced. Singapore is expensive for alcohol — a beer is £9–£12 — and cheap for food, which is the opposite of most places.
Seven nights in Bali: where to stay
This is the decision that determines what kind of holiday you have. Bali is not one place, and the areas are 60 to 120 minutes apart on slow roads.

Our recommendation for seven nights: split it. Three nights in Ubud, four on the coast. Ubud gives you the rice terraces, the temples, the monkey forest and a jungle villa; the coast gives you the sea and the beach clubs. You get both Balis rather than one.
If you’d rather not move, choose based on what you want most. Families should choose Nusa Dua — the water is calm and safe, which is not true of most Bali beaches. Couples wanting food and beach clubs should choose Seminyak. Anyone whose priority is scenery and quiet should choose Ubud and take day trips.
What’s worth doing in Bali
- Tegalalang or Jatiluwih rice terraces — Jatiluwih is a UNESCO site, far less crowded, and better
- Uluwatu Temple at sunset with the Kecak fire dance — touristy, still remarkable
- Mount Batur sunrise trek — a 2am start, four hours, and worth it if you’re reasonably fit
- Nusa Penida day trip — Kelingking Beach is the postcard; the boat crossing can be rough
- Tirta Empul water temple — a working temple, not a photo op; dress and behave accordingly
Skip: the Bali swing places, which are expensive and exist purely for Instagram, and anything involving captive wildlife.
Best time to go
Bali drives the timing. Its dry season is April to October, with June to September the driest and busiest. Singapore is roughly the same year-round: hot, humid and prone to short afternoon downpours, so it doesn’t constrain your dates.

Wet season in Bali is not a washout. It typically means an intense downpour for an hour or two in the afternoon and sunshine either side. If your budget is tight, January and February deliver the same island for substantially less — just avoid booking a trip built entirely around outdoor activities.

Where Bali is unusually good value: a private pool villa in Bali costs roughly what a standard hotel room costs in the Maldives or the Caribbean. If you’ve never had a villa with its own pool, this is the trip where it’s affordable.
Where Singapore isn’t: hotels are genuinely expensive and small. Budget £150–£250 a night for something decent and central, and don’t expect much square footage. The food more than compensates.
Making it a three-centre trip
If you have 12 to 14 nights, the natural additions are Mauritius on the way out or back, which turns this into a full Indian Ocean and Asia circuit, or Kuala Lumpur, which is an hour from Singapore and dramatically cheaper.
Practical things worth knowing
Bali’s tourist levy. Indonesia charges an international tourist levy on arrival in Bali, payable online in advance or at the airport. It’s modest but it does exist, and you’ll want the receipt. Check current requirements on GOV.UK Indonesia travel advice.
Getting around Bali. Traffic is genuinely bad and mapping-app timings are optimistic. A “40-minute” transfer from the airport to Ubud is 90 minutes in practice. Factor this into day trips and don’t plan two things in different parts of the island on the same day.
Money. Bali is largely cash for small purchases; Singapore is largely contactless. Take rupiah from a bank ATM rather than the airport, and avoid standalone money changers with implausibly good rates.
Scooters. Your travel insurance almost certainly does not cover you to ride one without the correct licence, and Bali’s roads punish inexperience. We mention this because it’s the single most common way UK travellers ruin a Bali holiday.
