January in the Caribbean is warm and outside the hurricane season, with daytime highs of about 28–29°C on Barbados, Antigua and Jamaica and roughly nine to eleven rain days a month. The cheapest all-inclusive week we sell in January 2027 is Barbados, from £1,729 per person with return flights; eight nights in Jamaica start at £1,749. St Lucia and Antigua are dearer, at £2,049, and cost more in January than in December, with prices rising again in February. January is the start of the drier season rather than the driest month: February and March are drier still on every island with monthly figures.

What is the weather like in the Caribbean in January?

January is one of the coolest months of the Caribbean year, which by British standards means hot, sunny days and warm nights. These are the official averages for each island, from its national meteorological service or the World Meteorological Organization.

Island, January Average high Average low Rain days Rainfall
Barbados 29.1°C 23.3°C 11 68.1mm
Antigua (St John’s) 28.2°C 22.3°C 10 56.9mm
Jamaica (Montego Bay) 27.9°C 20.7°C 9 85mm
St Lucia (Hewanorra) Seasonal figures only

Where the figures come from. Barbados: the Barbados Meteorological Services, 1991–2020 averages. Antigua: the World Meteorological Organization’s averages for St John’s, which do not state an averaging period. Jamaica: the World Meteorological Organization’s averages for Montego Bay, 1951–1980. Because the stations and periods differ, a difference of a degree between islands is not a meaningful ranking — in January all three are warm, and all three see rain on roughly a third of days.

St Lucia. The Caribbean Regional Climate Centre publishes seasonal figures for Hewanorra Airport rather than monthly ones: January to March is the island’s coolest season, at a mean temperature of 26.4°C over day and night, and the driest part of the year runs from February to April, with February the driest month at 52.4mm of rain.

Is January the dry season in the Caribbean?

It is the start of it, not the peak. On Barbados, Antigua and Jamaica, February and March are both drier than January on rain days and rainfall alike:

  • Barbados: January averages 11 rain days and 68.1mm. March has the least rain of the year, 38.9mm, and March to May the fewest rain days, 8 a month.
  • Antigua: January averages 10 rain days and 56.9mm; February has the least rain of the year, 37.6mm, and 8 rain days.
  • Jamaica: January averages 9 rain days and 85mm; March is the driest month on both measures, with 5 rain days and 27mm.
  • St Lucia: the driest stretch runs from February to April.

So if dry weather matters more than anything else, February or March is a slightly safer choice than January. If you want the January price and the January dates, the weather is still very good.

Is January in hurricane season?

No. GOV.UK gives the hurricane season in the Caribbean as normally running from June to November, so January sits well outside it.

How much sunshine is there?

On Barbados, the Meteorological Services’ 1991–2020 average is 8.5 hours of sunshine a day in January — more than any month from June to December, and only slightly behind February to April, at 8.7 to 8.8 hours.

How much does a Caribbean holiday cost in January?

These are our lead-in prices per person, based on two sharing, all-inclusive, with return flights from the UK, for January 2027 set against the months either side.

Island Nights December 2026 January 2027 February 2027
Barbados 7 £1,949pp £1,729pp £1,759pp
Jamaica 8 £1,769pp £1,749pp £1,779pp
St Lucia 7 £1,999pp £2,049pp £2,099pp
Antigua 7 £1,999pp £2,049pp £2,099pp

The Caribbean splits in two in January. On Barbados the price drops by £220 per person from December, and January 2027 is the joint-lowest month on sale for that package. Jamaica is £20 cheaper than December. But on St Lucia and Antigua prices keep rising through the winter: January costs £50 more than December, and February more again.

Per night, Jamaica is the best value. Eight nights for £1,749 works out at about £219 a night, against about £247 for seven nights on Barbados and about £293 on St Lucia or Antigua. All four include flights, so the extra night in Jamaica is the cheap part.

Which Caribbean island is best in January?

Barbados — the cheapest, and the easiest to reach

Seven nights all-inclusive at Sugar Bay Barbados or similar, a 4★ resort, from £1,729 per person in January 2027. Flights are from London, Manchester or Birmingham, direct and around eight to nine hours westbound. If the January price or a regional departure is what decides it, Barbados is the answer.

Jamaica — the best value per night

Eight nights all-inclusive at the RIU Montego Bay or similar, from £1,749 per person, with return flights from London, Manchester or Birmingham. The extra night makes it the cheapest of the four per night, and the island has the strongest sense of place. Our Jamaica guide covers every month’s price against the rain.

St Lucia — the most dramatic landscape

Seven nights all-inclusive at the Coconut Bay Beach Resort & Spa or similar, a 4★ resort, from £2,049 per person, with return flights from the UK. St Lucia is the mountainous one — the Pitons and the rainforest interior give you somewhere to go when lying down loses its appeal. January costs more than December there, and February more again.

Antigua — beaches and sailing

Seven nights all-inclusive at the Royalton Antigua Resort & Spa or similar, with dining, premium drinks and activities included, from £2,049 per person with return UK flights. Antigua is the one for beaches and sailing, and, like St Lucia, it costs more in January than in December.

To weigh the Caribbean against South East Asia, the Indian Ocean and the Canaries, our where is hot in January guide ranks eighteen places by January temperature and rain.

The Caribbean with a city

Two of our trips put a city before the beach, and both have January prices on sale.

New York and Barbados — three nights in New York at the Moxy NYC Times Square or similar, then four in Barbados on the west or south coast, with the New York to Bridgetown flight included, from £1,499 per person in January 2027, the lowest price on sale for that trip. An ESTA is needed for the United States and is not included.

Miami and St Lucia — three nights at the Loews Miami Beach, then seven all-inclusive at Serenity at Coconut Bay, from £2,099 per person in January 2027, £50 less than December.

Who is the Caribbean in January for, and who should look elsewhere?

It suits anyone who wants a week of reliable warmth in the darkest month at home, with the flight and the hotel bundled and everything paid for at the resort. Couples choosing between the islands should decide on landscape — St Lucia’s mountains, Antigua’s beaches and sailing, Barbados’s ease, Jamaica’s character — because the weather in January is close on all four.

Look elsewhere in the calendar if you want the very driest weeks: February or March is drier on every island with monthly figures. If you want a shorter flight and a city as well, Dubai in January is cooler, at a 24°C average high, and cheaper. Our where is hot in January and February guide compares eleven destinations across both months, and every long-haul trip we run through the winter is on the winter sun holidays page.

Travelling a month earlier? Our where is hot in December guide covers December across the Caribbean and seventeen other places.
