What all-inclusive actually means in Barbados
Barbados is an expensive island once you leave the hotel. A main course at a decent restaurant on the west coast costs what it would in London, and drinks add up quickly. That is why all-inclusive works better here than it does in cheaper destinations — you are not avoiding bad food, you are avoiding a genuinely high bill.
Is Barbados worth it compared with cheaper Caribbean islands?
It is a fair question given Barbados costs more than most of its neighbours.
What you get for the difference is infrastructure. Barbados has proper roads, reliable water and power, a real capital in Bridgetown, and direct flights from three UK airports rather than a connection through somewhere else. It is the easiest Caribbean island to travel to and around, and that matters on a seven-night trip where a missed connection costs you a day.
It is also genuinely beautiful on both coasts, in two different ways, which is unusual for an island this size.
All-inclusive or room only?
On a seven-night Barbados trip, all-inclusive usually wins on value unless eating out is the point of your holiday.
Where you will stay, and which coast suits you
The package is based on the south coast, the livelier and better-value side of the island. St Lawrence Gap is walkable from most south coast hotels and has the bulk of the restaurants and bars. The water is a little more active than the west.
The west coast — the Platinum Coast around Holetown and Speightstown — is calmer, quieter and more expensive. Want flat water for swimming and do not care about nightlife? Say so and we will price the west coast instead.
The east, on the Atlantic side, is not for swimming at all. It is worth a day trip to Bathsheba for the rock formations and the surf, but nobody stays there.
How much does a week in Barbados cost?
September is the cheapest month on the holiday. January is the cheaper and October the dearer. July and August are the peak, and December is the highest.
Because it is all-inclusive, your on-island spending is largely limited to excursions, tips and anything bought off-site. Budget for a catamaran trip and a day with a car or taxi to see the east coast — both are worth doing and neither is included.

When should you go?
December to May is the dry season and the most reliable weather, which is also why December prices are the highest of the year. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November; Barbados sits far enough east that direct hits are uncommon, but September and October are the wettest months.
September is the cheapest month on the holiday for exactly that reason. If you are comfortable with the odd heavy shower and want the island quiet, it is very good value. For dependable sunshine, pay the difference and go between January and April.

Who this holiday suits
Couples wanting a straightforward beach week. Good fit — one hotel, one unpacking, no decisions.
Families. Good fit — the south coast is easy, and all-inclusive removes the daily cost of feeding everyone on an expensive island.
First-time Caribbean visitors. Good fit — direct flights from three UK airports and reliable infrastructure make Barbados the gentlest introduction.
Anyone on a fixed budget. Good fit — the all-inclusive basis is the main reason. Consideration: excursions are still extra.
Barbados is one of the easiest Caribbean islands to get around independently. The bus network is cheap, frequent and covers the whole island, and English is the first language — which makes leaving the resort far less daunting than it is elsewhere in the region.
Who might prefer something else
If eating out is the point of your holiday, room only will serve you better. Barbados has excellent restaurants and paying twice for dinner is a waste.
Want to see more than one place? Consider pairing Barbados with New York or another island rather than seven nights in one hotel.
If you are price-sensitive above all, Barbados is expensive by Caribbean standards. Other islands cost less, though usually with a connection rather than a direct flight.

What a week in Barbados actually looks like
Most people underestimate how small the island is and overestimate how much they will move around. Barbados is 21 miles by 14, so nothing is more than about an hour away — but on an all-inclusive week the realistic pattern is three or four days at the hotel and two or three spent elsewhere.
The west coast is the day trip most guests make: calmer water, the Platinum Coast beaches, and the chance to snorkel with turtles. Bathsheba on the Atlantic side is the other, and it is worth the drive purely for how different it looks — huge rock formations, heavy surf, and no one swimming.
Bridgetown is a working capital rather than a tourist town. It is worth a morning for the Garrison and the rum history, less so for shopping. Oistins on a Friday night is the one fixed event locals will tell you about: a fish fry that has become the island’s weekly gathering, and it is genuinely good rather than a staged attraction.
The rest is beach. That is the point of the week, and the all-inclusive basis is what makes doing very little on an expensive island affordable.
Getting there
Barbados is one of the easiest Caribbean islands to reach from the UK, with direct flights from London, Manchester and Birmingham included in the package as standard rather than as a supplement. Flight time is around 8 to 9 hours westbound.
Grantley Adams airport is small and straightforward, and most south coast hotels are 20 to 30 minutes away. Transfers are not included as standard but can be added.
Entry requirements for UK travellers
British passport holders do not need a visa for Barbados. You do need to complete an immigration and customs form online before you arrive — it is free but mandatory, and easier done at home than at the airport. You will also need proof of an onward or return ticket.
Your passport must be valid for the length of your stay. A departure tax of BBD$55 applies to everyone aged two and over, normally included in the ticket price. Always check the latest official entry requirements on GOV.UK before travelling.
