The experience

USA in detail

Quick answer

A holiday to the USA costs from £1,199 per person, based on two people sharing. That covers 8 nights and return flights from London. January 2027 is the cheapest departure currently on sale. Secure it with £99pp and pay the balance nearer the time. Every holiday we sell is ATOL 10713 protected.

What is this USA multi-city holiday, and what does it cost?

It is eight nights across the United States, coast to coast: two nights each in New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Return international flights from London and three domestic flights between the cities are included, and you stay at 4★ hotels on a room-only basis. The advertised lead-in price is £1,199pp based on two sharing, for January and February 2027. Your exact price depends on dates, availability, room category and any options you add. It suits first-time visitors who want the four best-known American cities in one trip, and are happy to move every two nights. British visitors need an ESTA rather than a visa, and every booking is ATOL protected under licence 10713.

Why does this route work?

Because it runs one way, east to west, and flies every leg. New York comes first, then Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles, and three domestic flights replace what would otherwise be days of driving across the country. Each city is a clean change of scene: the skyline and the parks of New York, the Strip and the desert, the bay and the bridge, and the beaches and studios of Los Angeles.

The pace is the honest trade-off. Two nights in a city means one full day there, because the day you arrive and the day you leave are flying days. That is enough to see the headline sights; it is not enough to settle in. If one city matters more to you, ask your consultant to price extra nights there.

Flying west also works with the clock. New York is three hours ahead of Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles, so the flight from New York to Las Vegas gives you those three hours back on landing, and the two short hops down the west coast stay in the same time zone. The one big time change is the flight out from London, and it comes at the start, when New York’s pace keeps you busy while you adjust.

How much does it cost?

The advertised lead-in price is £1,199pp based on two sharing, for January and February 2027. November 2026 and March 2027 are £1,249pp; October 2026 is £1,289pp; April 2027 is £1,299pp; December 2026, May and September 2027 are £1,399pp; June 2027 is £1,499pp; and July and August 2027 are the dearest, at £1,599pp — £400 more than the lead-in.

That works out at about £150 per person per night, including the international and domestic flights. The hotels are room only, so meals are the largest cost outside the price, followed by city transport and attraction tickets. The ESTA and travel insurance are not included either.

When is the best time to go?

Four cities means four climates, and they peak at different times. These are the World Meteorological Organization’s official averages for 1981–2010, from the US National Weather Service.

Month New York high Las Vegas high San Francisco high Los Angeles high From
January 3.5°C 14.4°C 13.8°C 20.1°C £1,199pp
April 16.2°C 25.7°C 17.3°C 22.6°C £1,299pp
July 28.9°C 40.1°C 19.2°C 28.4°C £1,599pp
September 24.0°C 34.4°C 21.2°C 28.4°C £1,399pp
October 17.7°C 27.0°C 20.7°C 25.8°C £1,289pp

October is the best balance. All four cities average between 17.7°C and 27.0°C, the three western cities have fewer than four rain days each, and the holiday costs £1,289pp. April is close behind, at £1,299pp, though New York is a little cooler at 16.2°C and San Francisco averages 6.5 rain days.

Summer is the most expensive and the least comfortable in Las Vegas, which averages 40.1°C in July. January and February are the value months, at £1,199pp, but New York averages 3.5°C in January and San Francisco has around 11 rain days a month. One surprise: San Francisco is at its warmest in September, not July.

Who is this holiday for — and who should look elsewhere?

It suits first-time visitors who want to see America’s headline cities in one trip; travellers who would rather fly between cities than drive; and anyone who wants the flights and hotels arranged, with the days left free.

It is less suited to anyone who wants to slow down — two nights a city is brisk — or who wants meals included, since the hotels are room only. If New York is the priority, our New York city break gives it the whole trip. If the west coast appeals more, our San Francisco, Las Vegas and Mexico and Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Dominican Republic holidays pair it with a beach.

How does it compare with other USA holidays?

Holiday Cities Beach stay Choose it if…
USA Multi-City New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles No You want four cities, coast to coast

USA & Mexico San Francisco, Las Vegas Mexico You want the west coast and a beach
Las Vegas, LA & Dominican Republic Las Vegas, Los Angeles Dominican Republic You want Vegas, LA and the Caribbean

What are New York and Las Vegas like?

You start in New York, at a 4★ hotel such as ROW NYC or similar. The full day is for Times Square, the Statue of Liberty and Central Park. The Statue of Liberty stands on its own island and is reached by ferry; tickets are not included, so book them once your dates are confirmed. On the third day you fly to Las Vegas, to a 4★ hotel such as New York-New York Hotel & Casino or similar. Your full day there is the Strip and its casino resorts — or an optional Grand Canyon day trip, paid locally, which takes the whole day.

What are San Francisco and Los Angeles like?

On the fifth day you fly to San Francisco, to a 4★ hotel such as Hotel Zephyr San Francisco or similar. The Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and Fisherman’s Wharf make the day; Alcatraz tickets are not included, so book them once your dates are confirmed. On the seventh day you fly to Los Angeles, to a 4★ hotel such as Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City or similar, for Hollywood Boulevard and Santa Monica Pier, or an optional day at Universal Studios.

What do you need to know before you travel to the USA?

  • ESTA. Required under the Visa Waiver Programme. GOV.UK gives the fee as $40.27; it is valid for two years and allows stays of up to 90 days, and it is needed for transit as well as entry.
  • Passport. Valid for the length of your stay. A new passport needs a new ESTA.
  • Time. New York is five hours behind the UK; Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles are eight hours behind. For a few weeks in March and around the end of October the gap is an hour less, because the clocks change on different dates.
  • Money. The US dollar. Budget for meals, city transport and attraction tickets, which are not included.

Entry rules are GOV.UK’s guidance, checked on 17 September 2026. Check the latest official requirements before you travel, as they can change.

How do you book, and how are you protected?

Tell us your dates, your departure airport and who is travelling, and your consultant will confirm a live price, the hotels, the flights and the payment schedule in writing before you commit. The package is protected under ATOL 10713, and you receive an ATOL Certificate setting out what is covered. ATOL protects the money you pay if a travel company fails; it is not travel insurance, which you should arrange separately. Frequently asked questions

The lead-in price is £1,199 per person, based on two sharing, for eight nights including return flights from London, three domestic flights and 4★ hotels on a room-only basis. It applies in January and February 2027. July and August 2027 are the dearest months, at £1,599.

Return international flights from London, three domestic flights — New York to Las Vegas, Las Vegas to San Francisco, and San Francisco to Los Angeles — and eight nights at 4★ hotels on a room-only basis. ATOL 10713 protection covers the package.

Meals, city transport, attraction tickets, the ESTA and travel insurance are not included. Because the hotels are room only, meals are the biggest cost to budget for, followed by getting around each city and tickets for places such as Alcatraz or Universal Studios.

Not for a holiday of this length, but you do need an ESTA. GOV.UK says it costs $40.27, is valid for two years and allows stays of up to 90 days, and it is needed for transit as well as entry. Apply well before you fly; it is not included.

GOV.UK gives the fee as $40.27. An ESTA is valid for two years, so if you travelled on one recently it may still be current — check its expiry date against your return date. The ESTA is not included in the package price.

GOV.UK says your passport must be valid for the length of your stay. Your ESTA is linked to your passport, so if you renew your passport you will need a new ESTA before you travel.

It is enough for a first taste, not a deep one. Two nights in each city gives you one full day in each, because the days between are travel days. If you would rather slow down, ask your consultant about adding nights in whichever city matters most to you.

By air. Three domestic flights are included: New York to Las Vegas on day three, Las Vegas to San Francisco on day five, and San Francisco to Los Angeles on day seven. That replaces what would otherwise be long drives across the country.

Four-star hotels on a room-only basis, such as ROW NYC in New York, New York-New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Hotel Zephyr in San Francisco, and Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City, or similar. Tell us if a particular hotel matters to you and we will price it directly.

No. The hotels are room only, so all meals are your own. That keeps the lead-in price down and leaves you free to eat where you like in four very different food cities, but budget for it — it is the largest cost outside the package price.

October. Official averages put New York at 17.7°C, Las Vegas at 27.0°C, San Francisco at 20.7°C and Los Angeles at 25.8°C, with fewer than four rain days in each western city. It costs £1,289 per person, below the summer peak.

January and February 2027, at £1,199 per person. The trade-off is New York, which averages just 3.5°C in January, and San Francisco, with around 11 rain days a month. Los Angeles, at around 20°C, and Las Vegas are milder.

July and August 2027, at £1,599 per person — £400 more than the lead-in. They are also the hottest months in Las Vegas, which averages 40.1°C in July, so if you are not tied to school holidays, spring or autumn is better value.

Very. Official averages show highs of 37.1°C in June, 40.1°C in July and 38.9°C in August. Plan outdoor sightseeing for early morning, and think carefully about a summer Grand Canyon day trip. From October to April, average highs sit between 13.7°C and 27.0°C.

September, not July. San Francisco averages 21.2°C in September against 19.2°C in July. Pack a layer whatever the month; the city’s average highs stay between 13.8°C and 21.2°C all year.

No. A Grand Canyon day trip is optional from Las Vegas on the fourth day and paid locally. Tell your consultant if you want it arranged before you travel, as it takes up your one full day in Las Vegas.

No. Alcatraz is on the San Francisco day, but attraction tickets are not included in the package price. Book your Alcatraz tickets as early as you can once your dates are confirmed.

New York is five hours behind the UK, and Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles are eight hours behind. The US changes its clocks on different dates from the UK, so for a few weeks in March and in late October to early November the gap is an hour less.

International flights depart from London. If you would like to fly from elsewhere in the UK, ask when you enquire and your consultant will price it; any difference is confirmed in writing before you book.

Yes, ask when you enquire. This is a tailor-made holiday, so your consultant can price extra nights in any of the four cities, and confirm the flights and hotels in writing before you commit.

Yes. The package is protected under ATOL 10713, and you receive an ATOL Certificate setting out what is covered. ATOL protects the money you pay if a travel company fails; it is not travel insurance, which is not included and which you should arrange when you book.
