What does this Mauritius family holiday include, and what does it cost?

Why are the UK school holidays cheap here?
Because Mauritius is in the southern hemisphere, and that single fact is worth real money to a family.
On almost every beach holiday a British family can book, July and August carry the year’s heaviest premium — the school holidays collide with the Mediterranean high season and prices peak together. Mauritius does not work that way. Its seasons are inverted, so the UK summer holiday lands in Mauritian winter: dry, sunny, less humid, and outside the cyclone season entirely.
The price table follows the weather rather than the British school calendar:
July and August are the numbers that matter if you cannot travel in term time. Both sit close to the bottom of the range, and both fall in dry Mauritian winter outside cyclone season. Compare that with December, which is the peak here — Christmas demand meeting the island’s hot, wet season.
For a family tied to the school calendar, this is one of very few long-haul beach destinations where the summer holiday is not the expensive option.

What makes Mauritius good for children?
The lagoon. A coral reef rings the island, so the water inside it is shallow, calm and clear rather than open sea with waves and undertow. For families with small children or weak swimmers this is the single strongest argument for Mauritius over most beach destinations.
The winter weather. July and August are dry and warm rather than punishingly hot, which is easier on young children than a Mediterranean or Caribbean summer.
Short distances. The island is roughly 40 miles by 30, so a day out is never a long drive — though traffic around Port Louis makes journeys take longer than the map suggests.
Things to do that are not the beach. Casela nature park, the Chamarel coloured earths, waterfalls, a botanical garden with giant water lilies, and boat trips to small offshore islands. Enough to fill the days a beach cannot.
Safety in the water still needs supervision. A calm lagoon is not a swimming pool, and reef shoes matter — coral and sea urchins are unforgiving of bare feet in shallow water.
The flight is the hard part, not the destination. About 12 hours each way is a long time with young children, and it is worth being honest that this is the real cost of Mauritius over a short-haul beach holiday. What you get back is a time difference of only three or four hours, so nobody spends the first three days of the holiday awake at four in the morning. Parents who have done a transatlantic trip with small children will understand why that matters more than the flight length.
Food is easier here than in most long-haul destinations. Creole, Indian, Chinese and French cooking sit side by side on the island, and resort kitchens are used to feeding children who want none of it. Plain options are never difficult to find, and the fruit is exceptional.

Mauritius is UTC+4 — four hours ahead of the UK in winter, three during British Summer Time. Four hours is a manageable shift for children compared with a long-haul trip west, and there is no overnight time-zone penalty of the kind the Caribbean or the USA brings.
Entry requirements for UK travellers

British passport holders need no visa for up to 60 days, and this applies to children as well as adults. Each passport is stamped with the date the stay ends, must be valid for the duration of the stay and must have one blank page.
The Mauritius All in One travel form is completed online before arrival — one for every traveller, children included — and the QR code printed for the airport. Proof of onward or return travel is required. GOV.UK states no entry or visa fee.
Practicalities worth knowing
Cyclones and insurance. GOV.UK puts the cyclone season at November to May and notes that during a cyclone residents must stay indoors and insurance cover may lapse. A family travelling at Christmas is inside that window; read the policy on this point before buying it.
Reef shoes for everyone. The coral that keeps the lagoon calm makes bare feet a bad idea in shallow water, and sea urchins are common. Children notice this first and loudest.
Sun strength. The UV index is high even in the cool, breezy winter months when it does not feel strong enough to matter. Those dry July days catch people out far more than the obviously hot ones.
Modesty away from the beach. Swimwear is for the resort and the sand. Mauritius is religiously mixed and fairly conservative, and covering up for markets, temples and Port Louis is expected.
English works. English is the official language and is what signage and paperwork use, though French and Mauritian Creole are what people speak day to day.
