The experience

Finland in detail

Quick answer

A holiday to Finland costs from £899 per person, based on two people sharing. That covers 7 nights, bed and breakfast and return flights from London. October 2026 is the cheapest departure currently on sale. Secure it with £99pp and pay the balance nearer the time. Every holiday we sell is ATOL 10713 protected.

What is the Helsinki and Lapland holiday, and what does it cost?

It is seven nights in Finland: two in Helsinki, one on the Santa Claus Express sleeper train north, and four in Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland, where Santa Claus Village sits on the Arctic Circle. Return flights from London, your sleeper cabin, 4★ hotels with daily breakfast, and airport and station transfers are included. The advertised lead-in price is £899pp based on two sharing, for October 2026, with a deposit from £99 per person. Your exact price depends on dates, availability, room category and any options you add. It suits families and couples who want Lapland with a city first. British passport holders need no visa for Finland, and every booking is ATOL protected under licence 10713.

Why Helsinki first, then Lapland?

Because the train does the travelling for you. Two nights in Helsinki give you a full day in the capital — Senate Square, Market Square on the harbour and the Temppeliaukio Rock Church, built into the bedrock — before the Santa Claus Express takes you north overnight. You fall asleep in the south and wake up in Lapland, without losing a day to the journey.

Then four nights in Rovaniemi. That is the part of the trip most people come for, and four nights leave room for Santa Claus Village, a husky, reindeer or snowmobile excursion, and more than one evening to look for the Northern Lights.

What is the Santa Claus Express like?

It is the overnight sleeper train from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, and your own sleeper cabin is included. It turns the long journey north into a night on the train and makes it part of the holiday rather than a gap in it. Meals on board are not included, so eat in Helsinki before you board or bring something with you.

It also shapes the route. With the train in the middle, you arrive in Lapland on the fourth morning with a full day ahead of you, and Santa Claus Village is that day. The flights stay simple — out to Helsinki at the start — and the one long journey inside Finland happens while you sleep.

How much does it cost?

The advertised lead-in price is £899pp based on two sharing, for October 2026. November 2026 is £999pp, March 2027 £1,149pp, January 2027 £1,199pp and February 2027 £1,249pp. December 2026 is the dearest, at £1,599pp — the Christmas season in Lapland.

That works out at about £128 per person per night in October, with the flights, the sleeper cabin, the hotels, breakfast and transfers all inside the figure. What sits outside it: husky, reindeer and snowmobile excursions, the optional Northern Lights excursion, lunches and dinners, and travel insurance. Excursions are the cost to plan for; decide which matter most before you go.

Two things move the price more than anything else. The month, first: December is £700 more than October for the same seven nights. And the excursions you add in Lapland, which are priced locally and can be arranged by your consultant before you travel if you would rather have them settled.

When is the best time to go to Lapland?

These are the World Meteorological Organization’s official averages for 1971–2000, from the Finnish Meteorological Institute.

Month Rovaniemi high Rovaniemi low Helsinki high From
October 2.6°C -2.0°C 8.1°C £899pp
November -3.5°C -8.7°C 2.5°C £999pp
December -6.9°C -13.3°C -0.8°C £1,599pp
January -8.5°C -15.1°C -2.6°C £1,199pp
February -8.1°C -14.1°C -2.9°C £1,249pp
March -2.8°C -9.4°C 1.1°C £1,149pp

December is the Christmas trip. At £1,599pp it is the dearest month, and it is what most people picture: Santa Claus Village in the Christmas season. January and February are deep winter — the coldest months in Rovaniemi, averaging -8.5°C and -8.1°C by day — for £400 less than December in January. October is the value month, at £899pp, but Rovaniemi averages 2.6°C by day then, so winter conditions are less settled than from November onwards, when daytime highs stay below freezing through March.

Who is this holiday for — and who should look elsewhere?

It suits families and couples who want Lapland and Santa Claus Village; anyone who likes the idea of a night on a sleeper train; and travellers who want a city break in Helsinki added to the trip without another flight.

It is less suited to anyone who wants to go with every excursion paid for in advance — husky, reindeer, snowmobile and Northern Lights trips are all extra — or who dislikes serious cold. For a shorter Nordic city trip, our Oslo and Bergen holiday runs five nights by rail; for a festive city break without Lapland, see our Christmas market holidays.

How does it compare with other winter trips?

Holiday Nights Stops Choose it if…
Helsinki & Lapland 7 Helsinki, the Santa Claus Express, Rovaniemi You want Lapland and a city, by sleeper train
Oslo & Bergen 5 Oslo, Bergen You want Norway’s cities and fjord scenery
Christmas markets 2 to 4 One or two European cities You want a short festive city break

What is Helsinki like?

You stay two nights at a 4★ central hotel such as Sokos Hotel Presidentti or similar, with breakfast. The full day is for Senate Square and the white cathedral above it, Market Square on the harbour, and the Temppeliaukio Rock Church, built into the bedrock. On the third day you have the morning in the city before the transfer to the station and the overnight train north.

What is Rovaniemi like?

Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland, and Santa Claus Village, on the Arctic Circle outside the town, is where most of the day you arrive goes. You stay four nights at a 4★ hotel such as Santa’s Hotel Santa Claus or similar, with breakfast. The next days are yours: husky, reindeer and snowmobile excursions are optional and paid locally, and an optional Northern Lights excursion is planned for the sixth evening. The lights depend on solar activity and a clear sky and are never guaranteed, which is one reason four nights are better than two.

Our Lapland holidays guide covers each month’s cold, daylight and Northern Lights chances, and the landmarks in Helsinki and Rovaniemi worth your time.

What do you need to know before you travel to Finland?

  • Visa. None: Finland is in the Schengen area, and British visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180.
  • Passport. Issued less than ten years before you arrive, and valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area.
  • Border checks. The EU Entry/Exit System is being rolled out, with fingerprints and a photo taken on first entry; allow extra time.
  • Time. Finland is two hours ahead of the UK all year.
  • Money. The euro.
  • Clothing. Rovaniemi averages -8.5°C by day in January. Thermal layers, a warm coat, hat, gloves and boots with grip are essential.

Entry rules are GOV.UK’s guidance, checked in September 2026. Check the latest official requirements before you travel, as they can change.

How do you book, and how are you protected?

Tell us your dates, your departure airport and who is travelling, and your consultant will confirm a live price, the hotels, the train and the payment schedule in writing before you commit. A deposit from £99 per person holds the booking. The package is protected under ATOL 10713, and you receive an ATOL Certificate setting out what is covered. ATOL protects the money you pay if a travel company fails; it is not travel insurance, which you should arrange separately. For more holidays that combine several stops, see our multi-centre holidays.

ATOL 10713 protection covers the package, held with a deposit from £99 per person.

Husky, reindeer and snowmobile excursions, lunches and dinners, and travel insurance are not included. The Northern Lights excursion is optional and paid locally too. Excursions are the largest cost to budget for on top of the package price, so decide which matter most before you go.

Seven: two nights in Helsinki, one on the Santa Claus Express sleeper train, and four in Rovaniemi. You fly out on day one and home on day eight, so it fits a week of leave with the weekends either side.

It is the overnight sleeper train from Helsinki north to Rovaniemi in Lapland. Your own sleeper cabin is included, so the journey north is a night on the train rather than a day of travelling, and you wake up in Lapland on the fourth morning.

Santa Claus Village, on the Arctic Circle outside Rovaniemi, is planned for the day you arrive in Lapland. Excursions such as husky, reindeer and snowmobile rides are not included; your consultant can arrange any of them before you travel.

There is no guarantee, and nobody honest can give one — the lights depend on solar activity and a clear sky. An optional Northern Lights excursion, paid locally, is planned for the sixth evening, and four nights in Lapland give you more than one chance.

Very. Official averages show daytime highs of -6.9°C in December, -8.5°C in January and -8.1°C in February, with nights around -13°C to -15°C. Rovaniemi stays below freezing by day from November to March, so pack thermal layers, a proper winter coat, hat, gloves and warm boots.

Cold, but milder than Lapland. Official averages put Helsinki at -0.8°C by day in December and -2.6°C in January, against -6.9°C and -8.5°C in Rovaniemi. Dress for Lapland and Helsinki will feel comfortable.

For Christmas in Lapland, December; for deep winter at a lower price, January or February. December is the Christmas peak, at £1,599 per person. January and February, at £1,199 and £1,249, are the deep-winter months. October, at £899, is the cheapest, though Rovaniemi averages 2.6°C by day then, so winter conditions are less settled.

October 2026, at £899 per person for seven nights. November follows at £999 and March at £1,149. December, the Christmas season in Lapland, is the dearest at £1,599 — £700 more than October.

December is £1,599 per person, £700 more than October and £400 more than January 2027. If Christmas itself is not the point, January gives you the same trip in deep winter for £1,199.

In Helsinki, a 4★ central hotel such as Sokos Hotel Presidentti, and in Rovaniemi a 4★ hotel such as Santa's Hotel Santa Claus — both or similar, with breakfast. Tell us if a particular hotel matters to you and we will price it directly.

Yes, at both hotels. Lunches and dinners are your own, and so are meals on the sleeper train. Budget for meals alongside excursions, which are the two main costs outside the package price.

No. Finland is in the Schengen area, and GOV.UK says British visitors can travel without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must have been issued less than ten years before you arrive and be valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area.

Finland is two hours ahead of the UK all year, because both countries change their clocks on the same dates. It is a small enough gap that there is no real jet lag to plan around.

The euro, as in most of the Schengen area. Carry a card for most payments, and budget for excursions, lunches and dinners, which are not included in the package price.

Flights depart from London. If you would like to fly from elsewhere in the UK, ask when you enquire and your consultant will price it; any difference is confirmed in writing before you book.

Yes. Airport and station transfers are included, so you are taken from the airport to your Helsinki hotel, from the hotel to the station for the Santa Claus Express, and on to your hotel in Rovaniemi.

Layers for temperatures well below freezing: thermal base layers, a fleece, a warm waterproof coat, hat, scarf, insulated gloves and warm boots with a good grip. Rovaniemi averages -8.5°C by day in January, and colder at night.

Yes. The package is protected under ATOL 10713, and you receive an ATOL Certificate setting out what is covered. ATOL protects the money you pay if a travel company fails; it is not travel insurance, which is not included and which you should arrange when you book.
