The experience

Norway in detail

Quick answer

A holiday to Norway costs from £499 per person, based on two people sharing. That covers 5 nights and return flights from London. October 2026 is the cheapest departure currently on sale. Secure it with £99pp and pay the balance nearer the time. Every holiday we sell is ATOL 10713 protected.

What is the Oslo and Bergen holiday, and what does it cost?

It is five nights in Norway: two in Oslo, the rail journey west across the country, then three in Bergen. You fly into Oslo and home from Bergen, and the rail journey, and your airport and station transfers, are included. Both stays are at 4★ hotels on a room-only basis. The flights include cabin baggage only — checked baggage is extra. The advertised lead-in price is £499pp based on two sharing, for October, November, January, February and March; July and August are the dearest months at £749pp. Your exact price depends on dates, availability, room category and any options you add. It suits travellers who pack light and want two cities joined by one of Europe’s great train journeys. No visa is needed, and every booking is ATOL protected under licence 10713.

Why travel from Oslo to Bergen by train?

Because the journey is part of the holiday. Oslo sits in the east of the country and Bergen on the west coast, and the rail line between them crosses Norway rather than skirting it. Taking the train turns a transfer into one of the days you remember.

The flights are built around it. You fly into Oslo and home from Bergen, so the trip only ever moves forward — no day lost doubling back to the capital. Transfers to and from both stations are included, so the day of the journey needs no planning beyond getting up.

Is two nights in Oslo and three in Bergen the right split?

For most people, yes. Two nights in Oslo give one full day: the Opera House and Vigeland Park in a day is comfortable. Bergen gets the extra night because it has the fjords on its doorstep — one day for Bryggen and the Fløyen funicular, and one for a fjord cruise or simply the harbour.

If you want a longer stay in either city, it can be priced on request, and your consultant confirms the figure in writing before you commit.

How much does the Oslo and Bergen holiday cost?

The advertised lead-in price is £499pp based on two sharing, for October, November, January, February and March. December and April are £549pp; May and September are £649pp; June is £699pp; and July and August are the dearest at £749pp — £250 more than the cheapest months.

Two things matter as much as the headline. First, the flights include cabin baggage only: checked baggage is not included, so if you need a suitcase in the hold, tell us before you book and we will quote it. Second, both stays are room only and meals are not included, so budget for eating out in both cities. Fjord cruises, city transport and travel insurance are also extra.

When is the best time to go to Oslo and Bergen?

These are the World Meteorological Organization’s official averages for 1961–1990, supplied by the Norwegian Meteorological Institute.

Month Oslo average high Bergen average high Bergen rain days Bergen rainfall
January −1.8°C 3.6°C 21 190mm
April 9.1°C 9.1°C 17 114mm
May 15.8°C 14.0°C 17 106mm
July 21.5°C 17.6°C 18 148mm
September 15.1°C 14.2°C 23 283mm
October 9.3°C 11.2°C 24 271mm

Bergen is wet in every month — 16 to 24 rain days whatever the season, with the most rain in September and October. Pack a waterproof whenever you go.

May is the best balance. Bergen has its lowest rainfall of the year, 106mm, Oslo averages 15.8°C, and the holiday costs £649pp — £100 less than July. Summer brings the warmest days, with Oslo at 20.4°C to 21.5°C from June to August, at £699 to £749pp.

The £499 months are the cold ones. Oslo’s average high is below freezing in January and February, and October is Bergen’s wettest month by rain days. They are good value for anyone happy to dress for the weather, and we would rather you chose them knowing that.

Our Oslo to Bergen train guide sets every month’s price against the weather in both cities and the daylight for the journey, and covers the Bergen Railway from Oslo over the Hardangervidda to Finse.

Who is this holiday for — and who should look elsewhere?

It suits people who travel light and like a trip with a journey at its centre; couples and friends who want two contrasting cities in five nights; and anyone who wants to see Norway by rail rather than by ship.

It is less suited to anyone who needs a suitcase in the hold and has not budgeted for it; to people who want meals included; or to anyone after guaranteed dry weather — Bergen does not offer it in any month. For a city pair with warmer weather and an Italian train between them, see our Rome and Venice holiday, or browse our city breaks.

How does it compare with other two-city rail trips?

Holiday Nights Cities Board Choose it if…
Oslo & Bergen by Rail 5 Oslo, Bergen Room only You want Norway, fjords and a cross-country train
Rome & Venice 5 Rome, Venice Room only You want Italian art, food and warmer weather

What are the two nights in Oslo like?

You stay at a 4★ hotel such as Thon Hotel Opera or similar, room only. The full day is the one to plan: walk up the sloping roof of the Opera House for the view over the fjord, then spend the afternoon among the sculptures of Vigeland Park.

For the Viking Age, go to the Historical Museum. The former Viking Ship Museum is closed — the museum’s own site says it will reopen as the Museum of the Viking Age in 2027 — and in the meantime it points visitors to the Viking Age objects at the Historical Museum in Oslo.

What are the three nights in Bergen like?

The included rail journey brings you west to Bergen, where you stay at a 4★ hotel such as Scandic Ørnen or similar, room only. Start at Bryggen, the old Hanseatic wharf with its row of wooden merchant buildings, then take the Fløyen funicular up the mountain behind the city for the view back over the harbour.

The last full day is the one for the fjords. A fjord cruise from Bergen is optional and paid locally or arranged in advance on request; otherwise the harbour and the city fill the day comfortably.

What do you need to know before you travel to Norway?

  • Visa. None: Norway is in the Schengen area, and GOV.UK says British visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without one.
  • Passport. It must have been issued less than ten years before you arrive, and be valid for at least three months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.
  • Entry/Exit System. You may be asked to register fingerprints and a photograph when you enter the Schengen area. It is free, and the record lasts three years.
  • Baggage. Cabin baggage only is included; checked baggage is extra.
  • Time and money. Norway is one hour ahead of the UK all year. The currency is the Norwegian krone.

Entry rules are GOV.UK’s guidance, checked on 25 September 2026. Check the latest official requirements before you travel, as they can change.

How do you book, and how are you protected?

Tell us your dates, your departure airport, who is travelling and any checked baggage you need, and your consultant will confirm a live price, the hotels and the payment schedule in writing before you commit. The package is protected under ATOL 10713, and you receive an ATOL Certificate setting out what is covered. ATOL protects the money you pay if a travel company fails; it is not travel insurance, which you should arrange separately.

Frequently asked questions

The lead-in price is £499 per person, based on two sharing, for five nights including flights into Oslo and home from Bergen, the rail journey between them, two nights in Oslo, three in Bergen and your transfers. That price applies in October, November, January, February and March. July and August are the dearest months at £749.

Flights from London to Oslo and from Bergen back to London with a cabin baggage allowance, the rail journey from Oslo to Bergen, two nights at a 4★ Oslo hotel such as Thon Hotel Opera or similar, three nights at a 4★ Bergen hotel such as Scandic Ørnen or similar, and airport and station transfers. Both stays are room only.

No — the flights include cabin (hand) baggage only. If you want to check in a suitcase, that is an extra cost, and it is worth deciding before you book rather than at the airport. Tell us at enquiry and we will quote checked baggage for your flights.

Checked baggage, meals, fjord cruises and other excursions, city transport and travel insurance are not included. Both hotel stays are room only, so breakfast and all other meals are your own. We can quote checked baggage or a fjord cruise if you would like them arranged before you travel.

No. Both hotel stays are room only and meals are not included, so breakfast is your own. Tell us when you enquire if you would like breakfast added, and your consultant will confirm the price in writing before you commit.

No. The museum’s own site says the former Viking Ship Museum in Oslo is closed and will reopen as the Museum of the Viking Age in 2027. In the meantime it points visitors to Viking Age objects at the Historical Museum in Oslo, which is the place to go on this trip.

No. Norway is in the Schengen area, and GOV.UK says British visitors can travel without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must have been issued less than ten years before you arrive and be valid for at least three months after you leave the Schengen area.

Yes. GOV.UK says that when you enter the Schengen area, which includes Norway, for a short stay you may need to register biometric details such as fingerprints and a photograph. Registration is free and your digital record is valid for three years, so it applies at your first crossing rather than every trip.

Yes, in every month. Official averages for Bergen show 16 to 24 rain days a month, with the most rain in September and October, at 283mm and 271mm. May is the driest by rainfall, at 106mm. Pack a waterproof whenever you go — it is part of the city’s character.

June to August has the warmest weather — Oslo averages 20.4°C to 21.5°C and Bergen around 17°C — but it is the dearest time, at £699 to £749. May is the best balance: Oslo averages 15.8°C, Bergen has its lowest rainfall of the year, and the holiday costs £649.

October, November, January, February and March, all at £499 per person. They are the cold months: Oslo’s average high is below freezing in January and February, and October is Bergen’s rainiest month by rain days. They suit people who want the cities cheaply and are happy to dress for the weather.

Cold. The official average high is −1.8°C in January and −0.9°C in February, and still only 3.5°C in March. Bergen, on the coast, is milder at around 4°C in January but much wetter. Bring warm layers, gloves and waterproof shoes for a winter trip.

By train — the rail journey from Oslo to Bergen is included, and it crosses the country from east to west. Your transfers to the station in Oslo and from the station to your Bergen hotel are included too, so the only thing to organise on the day is a window seat.

So there is no doubling back. You fly into Oslo, cross the country by train, and fly home from Bergen, which means every leg of the trip moves you forward. It saves the day a return journey to Oslo would cost.

Yes. Airport and station transfers are included, so you are taken from Oslo airport to your hotel, to and from the stations for the rail journey, and to Bergen airport at the end. Getting around each city is your own, as city transport is not included.

In Oslo, a 4★ hotel such as Thon Hotel Opera or similar, and in Bergen, a 4★ hotel such as Scandic Ørnen or similar, both room only. Hotels are named as examples of the standard; tell us if a particular property matters to you and we will price it directly.

No. A fjord cruise from Bergen is optional — it is the classic day out from the city and fits naturally on the fifth day. It is paid locally or arranged in advance on request, and your consultant can quote one before you travel.

Bryggen is Bergen’s old Hanseatic wharf, a row of wooden merchant buildings along the harbour and the most recognisable sight in the city. It is the natural starting point for the first day in Bergen, before taking the Fløyen funicular up the mountain behind it for the view.

The Norwegian krone. Because both hotel stays are room only and meals are not included, budget for eating out in both cities, and for a fjord cruise or city transport if you want them — neither is part of the package price.

Norway is one hour ahead of the UK all year, because both countries change their clocks on the same dates. There is no jet lag to speak of, which suits a five-night trip where every day counts.

Yes. The package is protected under ATOL 10713, and you receive an ATOL Certificate setting out what is covered. ATOL protects the money you pay if a travel company fails; it is not travel insurance, which is not included and which you should arrange when you book.
