The experience

Tenerife in detail

Quick answer

A holiday to Tenerife costs from £359 per person, based on two people sharing. That covers 5 nights and return flights from London. November 2026 is the cheapest departure currently on sale. Secure it with £99pp and pay the balance nearer the time. Every holiday we sell is ATOL 10713 protected.

What does a Tenerife holiday include, and what does it cost?

Five nights at the GF Gran Costa Adeje or similar 4★ with return flights from London and daily breakfast listed in the package. ATOL protection under licence 10713 applies and a £99 per person deposit holds it. Regional UK airports are available at a supplement confirmed at enquiry. Excursions, car hire, transfers and travel insurance are not included, and your meal arrangement is confirmed in writing before you pay. Tenerife is the largest and most varied of the Canaries, which is both its appeal and the reason it is busier than the others.

When is the best time to go?

November is the cheapest month, and it is also one of the best. Tenerife in November is warm, dry in the south, and considerably quieter than the summer — which is when the island does precisely what people come to the Canaries for.

July and August are joint dearest, driven by school holidays rather than better weather. The south of Tenerife is reliably warm in every month of the year; you are not buying sunshine in August, you are buying availability.

Month Notes
November Cheapest, and among the best for weather
January Warm while the UK is not
February Half-term pushes it up
May Comfortable before the summer crowds
March Warming, still quiet
June Hot and filling up
September Still very warm
October, December December carries a festive premium
July, August Dearest, on school-holiday demand

The gap between November and August is the single largest lever on the holiday, and it buys you a quieter island as well as a cheaper one.

Thinking of December? Our where is hot in December guide compares Tenerife with Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and the long-haul options on official temperature and rain.

Tenerife or Lanzarote?

The two we are asked to compare most, and the price difference is considerable.

Factor Tenerife Lanzarote
Size Largest Canary island Small, quiet
Landscape Mount Teide, forests, black and gold beaches Volcanic fields, almost lunar
Things to do Considerably more Two or three set-piece days
Nightlife Costa Adeje and Las Américas have plenty Very little
Best for Families and variety Value and quiet

Lanzarote is the better value by a clear margin. Tenerife gives you more island, more to do and more choice of evening, and Mount Teide is a genuinely extraordinary day out. Which is worth more comes down to one question: do you intend to leave the resort?

What you will actually do

Mount Teide is the highest point in Spain and the third largest volcano in the world measured from its base. The national park around it is above the cloud line, so you drive up through forest into a landscape that looks like another planet. The cable car goes most of the way to the summit; the final ascent needs a permit applied for in advance and most visitors do not bother. Go early, take a jacket — it is cold up there whatever the coast is doing.

Playa del Duque is the best beach in Costa Adeje and among the better ones on the island — imported golden sand rather than the volcanic black of the north, which is what most visitors picture and rarely get elsewhere.

Whale and dolphin watching from Costa Adeje is genuinely reliable — pilot whales are resident in the strait between Tenerife and La Gomera year-round rather than seasonal. It is one of the few wildlife excursions in Europe where seeing something is close to certain.

The north of the island is a different place entirely: green, wet, and far less developed, with La Laguna’s colonial old town and the Anaga forest. If you hire a car for a day, that is where to take it.

The island has two climates divided by a mountain. The south is dry and reliably sunny, the north is greener and cloudier, and Teide sits between them. A grey morning in Puerto de la Cruz says nothing about the weather in Costa Adeje.

What changes your price?

  • The month. November at its cheapest against July at its dearest or August for the same five nights.
  • Departure airport. Priced from London, with regional UK airports at a supplement confirmed at enquiry.
  • Hotel and room grade. The GF Gran Costa Adeje or similar is 4★; sea-view and upgraded categories, and resorts elsewhere on the island, are quoted individually.
  • Nights. A week rather than five nights is priced on request.
  • Excursions. Teide, whale watching and the north all cost extra and none is in the package.

Who this holiday suits

  • Families, because Tenerife has the widest choice of resorts and things to do of any Canary island.
  • Anyone who wants winter sun with an actual island attached rather than just a pool.
  • Travellers who will do one big day out — Teide is worth the trip on its own.
  • People who want some choice of restaurants and evenings without going to Gran Canaria’s south.
  • Anyone who dislikes long flights but wants reliable warmth in January.

Who might prefer something else

  • If the budget is the constraint, Lanzarote per person is a great deal cheaper for the same five nights.
  • Want quiet? Costa Adeje and Las Américas are developed and busy. Lanzarote or Tenerife’s north are calmer.
  • Want lush green scenery from your hotel? The south is dry and the green is all in the north.
  • If July or August are fixed, you are paying the top price for the busiest weeks rather than better weather.
  • Want all-inclusive? The package is not — ask and we will price one.
  • Comparing options? You can see all our beach holidays side by side.
  • If this is nearly right, look at our 5 Nights Lanzarote Escape too before you decide.

Ways to upgrade

All quoted at enquiry against your dates.

  • A sea-view or upgraded room at the GF Gran Costa Adeje
  • A different resort — Los Cristianos, Las Américas or the quieter north
  • Seven nights rather than five
  • Half board or all-inclusive where the hotel offers it
  • Teide cable car, whale watching or a north-island tour booked in advance
  • Car hire and airport transfers

What is not included?

  • Transfers from Tenerife South, around twenty-five minutes to Costa Adeje. We can arrange them, and it is worth checking which airport your flights use.
  • The Teide cable car, and the summit permit if you want the final ascent.
  • Whale watching and boat trips from Costa Adeje.
  • Car hire, which is how most people reach Teide and the north.
  • Meals beyond the board arrangement, which we confirm in writing before you pay.
  • Travel insurance, and any resort charge collected locally by the hotel.

Getting there and getting around

Flights are from London, around four and a half hours, with regional UK airports at a supplement confirmed at enquiry. The Canaries are on GMT — the same as the UK in winter and an hour behind during British Summer Time, so there is effectively no jet lag.

Transfers are not included. Tenerife South airport is around twenty-five minutes from Costa Adeje; Tenerife North is much further and is worth checking if your routing uses it. On the island, buses along the south coast are frequent and cheap, and a hire car for a day is how most people see Teide and the north.

Entry requirements for UK travellers

Checked against GOV.UK foreign travel advice on 17 September 2026.

The Canary Islands are part of Spain and therefore in the Schengen area. British passport holders need no visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years of your arrival date and be valid at least three months after you leave.

The EU’s biometric Entry/Exit System is rolling out, replacing passport stamps with fingerprints and a photograph on your first crossing. It is free, lasts three years and speeds up later trips. ETIAS is not currently required.

Practicalities worth knowing

The Canaries sit outside the EU VAT area, so alcohol, tobacco and perfume cost less than on the Spanish mainland and duty-free allowances apply on the way home.

Tenerife has two airports and they are not close to each other. Tenerife South serves the resorts; Tenerife North is over an hour away from Costa Adeje. Check which one your flights use before booking a transfer.

Teide is above the cloud line and considerably colder than the coast — often by fifteen degrees or more. People go up in shorts and regret it. Take a jacket regardless of what the beach is doing.

The south is dry and the north is wet, and they can be doing completely different things on the same day. If it is cloudy at your hotel, the answer is often to drive twenty minutes rather than write the day off.

Booking and protection

Your booking is covered by our ATOL licence 10713 and we hold IATA accreditation 91285611. It is held with a deposit of £99 per person, with the balance due before travel.

Prices are per person, based on two people sharing. November and January are the two months where the price and the weather both work in your favour.

Frequently asked questions

From £359 per person for five nights, reduced from £460, including return flights from London and a 4★ hotel in Costa Adeje. November is the cheapest month and July and August are joint dearest. Your exact figure is confirmed at enquiry.

November, or January. Both are warm, dry in the south and considerably quieter than summer. The south of the island is reliably warm every month of the year, so in August you are paying for availability rather than better weather.

Lanzarote per person is a great deal cheaper for the same five nights and much quieter. Tenerife gives you more island, more to do, more choice of evening, and Mount Teide. Which is worth more comes down to whether the resort is the holiday or the base for it.

It is the highest point in Spain and the national park around it sits above the cloud line, so you drive up through forest into a landscape that looks like another planet. The cable car goes most of the way up. It is the best day out in the Canaries, comfortably.

Only for the final ascent to the actual summit, which must be applied for in advance and which most visitors skip. The cable car takes you to just below it, and the views and the landscape are the same. Neither the cable car nor the permit is included in the package.

The GF Gran Costa Adeje or similar 4★, in Costa Adeje on the south-west coast. Playa del Duque, the best beach in the area, is close by. Alternative resorts in Los Cristianos, Las Américas or the quieter north can all be quoted against your dates.

Your meal arrangement is confirmed in writing before you pay, so there is no ambiguity about what is covered. Ask when you enquire and we will confirm what is covered.

Unusually so. Pilot whales are resident in the strait between Tenerife and La Gomera year-round rather than seasonal, so sightings are close to certain rather than a matter of luck. It is one of the few wildlife excursions in Europe you can genuinely count on.

Completely different — green, wet and far less developed, with La Laguna's colonial old town and the Anaga forest. If you hire a car for one day, that is where to take it. The contrast with the dry, developed south surprises most first-time visitors.

Yes, and they are not close together. Tenerife South serves the resorts and is around twenty-five minutes from Costa Adeje. Tenerife North is over an hour away. Check which one your flights use before arranging a transfer — it is an easy and expensive thing to get wrong.

No. The Canary Islands are part of Spain and therefore in the Schengen area. British passport holders can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years of arrival and be valid three months after you leave.

The Canaries are on GMT — the same as the UK in winter and an hour behind during British Summer Time. For a four-and-a-half-hour flight that means effectively no jet lag in either direction, which suits a five-night trip particularly well.

Yes. The islands sit outside the EU VAT area, so alcohol, tobacco and perfume cost less than on the Spanish mainland and duty-free allowances apply on the way home. It is a genuine difference rather than a marketing claim.

Considerably colder than the coast — often by fifteen degrees or more, and there can be snow in winter. People go up in shorts and regret it within minutes of leaving the car. Take a jacket regardless of what the beach is doing when you set off.

It is the best of the Canaries for them — the widest choice of resorts, the most to do, and everything from water parks to whale watching within a short drive. The south is set up for it in a way Lanzarote is not. It is also the most expensive of the three for that reason.

Not for the resort — buses along the south coast are frequent and cheap. For Teide and the north, yes, for a day at least. Both are genuinely worth seeing and neither is convenient by public transport. Car hire is not included and we can arrange it.

It works well — three days by the pool and beach, one for Teide and one for either the north or a boat trip. A week is priced on request and suits anyone who wants to add the north properly rather than skim it. Five does not feel rushed.

The island is high enough that the mountains split the weather. The south is dry and sunny; the north catches the cloud and is green because of it. They can be doing entirely different things on the same day, so a cloudy morning at your hotel is often solved by driving twenty minutes.

Ninety-nine pounds per person, with the balance due before travel. The holiday is ATOL 10713 protected and we hold IATA accreditation 91285611. Prices are per person, based on two people sharing.

No. Tenerife South airport is around twenty-five minutes from Costa Adeje by taxi or shuttle. We can arrange a private transfer as part of your booking if you would rather not sort it on arrival — just ask when you enquire and we will price it.

It sits between the two — more developed and livelier than Lanzarote, calmer than Playa de las Américas next door, which is where most of the nightlife is. For quiet, the north or Lanzarote are better. Want a lot going on? Las Américas or Gran Canaria's south.

November and January are both cheapest and best, and hold availability reasonably well. February half-term, Christmas and New Year go early. July and August sell on school-holiday demand per person despite being the poorest value of the year.
