The experience

Naples in detail

Quick answer

A holiday to Naples costs from £249 per person, based on two people sharing. That covers 4 nights and return flights from London. January 2027 is the cheapest departure currently on sale. Secure it with £99pp and pay the balance nearer the time. Every holiday we sell is ATOL 10713 protected.

What does a Naples and Amalfi holiday include, and what does it cost?

Four nights at the Palazzo Alabardieri or similar 4★ in Naples with return flights from London. ATOL protection under licence 10713 applies and a £99 per person deposit holds it. Regional UK airports are available at a supplement confirmed at enquiry. January is the cheapest month and July the dearest. Excursions to the Amalfi Coast, Capri, Pompeii and Vesuvius are not included, nor are transfers, the city tourist tax or travel insurance, and your meal arrangement is confirmed in writing before you pay.

Does the Amalfi Coast work in winter?

Naples does. The coast largely does not, and this is the one page in our Italian range where we would steer you away from the cheapest months.

The Amalfi Coast runs on a season. Ferry services along the coast are reduced or suspended outside it, and a significant number of coastal hotels, restaurants and beach clubs close for the winter entirely. Capri empties. The road is still there and the villages are still beautiful, but a good deal of what you would go for is shut.

Naples itself is completely different. It is a large working city that does not close — the archaeological museum, the churches, the pizza, Pompeii and Vesuvius all operate year-round, and the city is arguably better in winter without the heat and the crowds.

Month Naples Amalfi Coast
January 2027 Open, quiet, cold Largely closed
February 2027 Open, quiet Largely closed
November Mild and good Winding down
December Christmas in Naples is a spectacle Largely closed
May Excellent Open, warm, not yet crowded
September Excellent Open, warm sea, quieter
October Very good Season tailing off
June Hot Open and busy
August Very hot, many places shut Peak crowds
July Dearest and hottest Peak crowds

May and September are the two months to aim for. Both have the coast fully open, warm weather, and prices well below July. September has the warmer sea of the two.

If you book January, treat it as a Naples and Pompeii trip with a scenic drive, not an Amalfi Coast holiday. Tell us your dates and we will confirm what is actually running before you book rather than leaving you to find out on arrival.

What you will actually do

Pompeii is the reason many people come, and it is larger than almost anyone expects — a whole Roman town rather than a ruin, and most of a day. It opens year-round. Herculaneum nearby is smaller, better preserved and far quieter.

Vesuvius can be climbed to the crater rim, with a road most of the way and a walk at the top. Closures happen in bad weather, particularly in winter.

The Amalfi Coast — Positano, Amalfi, Ravello — is a day trip by road or ferry in season. The coast road is spectacular and slow, and driving it yourself is not for the nervous.

Capri is a ferry ride from Naples or Sorrento, busy in season and largely shut out of it.

Naples itself is the part visitors underrate. The National Archaeological Museum holds the finds from Pompeii, including the mosaics and frescoes that were taken off site. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And the pizza is not a marketing claim — this is where it was invented and it is measurably different here.

Spaccanapoli is the long straight lane that splits the old city, and walking its length is the best free hour in Naples — churches, workshops, street shrines, laundry overhead and food at every few paces.

Naples Underground is a second city beneath the first: Greek quarries, Roman aqueducts and wartime air-raid shelters, entered from the historic centre. It is cool in summer and open year-round, which makes it a useful wet-weather option too.

Sorrento sits between Naples and the coast proper, and is the obvious alternative base. It stays livelier out of season than the Amalfi villages do, though quieter than the city.

What changes your price?

  • The month. January at its cheapest against July at its dearest — but the two buy different holidays.
  • Departure airport. Priced from London, with regional UK airports at a supplement confirmed at enquiry.
  • Where you stay. The lead-in is in Naples; basing yourself in Sorrento or on the coast itself is quoted separately.
  • Extra nights, which this itinerary rewards given how much is within reach.
  • Excursions, none of which is included — Pompeii, Vesuvius, Capri and the coast are all extra.

Who this holiday suits

  • Travellers who want Roman archaeology at first hand — Pompeii and Herculaneum are unmatched.
  • Food-led visitors. Naples has the best cheap eating in Italy.
  • Anyone who wants a city with an edge rather than a polished tourist centre.
  • May and September travellers who want the coast open and the prices low.
  • People happy to organise their own days out, since no excursion is included.

Who might prefer something else

  • If you are set on the Amalfi Coast and can only travel in winter, this is the wrong trip in the wrong months. Ask us about May or September instead.
  • Prefer art and galleries? Our Rome and Florence twin-city break starts at £339 per person.
  • For lakes and northern Italy, Milan, Lake Como and Venice runs six nights from £439.
  • Prefer a polished, orderly Italian city? Naples is loud, chaotic and grubby in places. That is much of its character but it is not for everyone.
  • For a beach holiday, this is a city base with excursions rather than a resort.
  • Not sure this is the one? Browse our other city breaks and tell us what appeals.
  • Something similar? Our Milan City Break – 3 Nights Italy is the closest thing we sell to this one.

Ways to upgrade

All quoted at enquiry against your dates.

  • A higher room category or a more central Naples address
  • A base in Sorrento or on the Amalfi Coast itself rather than in the city
  • Extra nights — four is tight for everything within reach
  • Guided excursions to Pompeii, Herculaneum or Vesuvius
  • A private driver for the coast road, which is the civilised way to do it
  • Airport transfers

What is not included?

  • All excursions. Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Capri and the Amalfi Coast are each extra and each needs arranging.
  • Ferries and coast transport, which are also seasonal.
  • The Italian city tourist tax, charged per person per night at the hotel.
  • Airport transfers.
  • Meals beyond the board arrangement, which we confirm in writing before you pay.

How do you get there and get around?

Flights are from London, around two and a half to three hours, with regional UK airports at a supplement confirmed at enquiry. Italy is one hour ahead of the UK.

Transfers are not included. Naples airport is close to the city centre, which makes this one of the shorter transfers in our Italian programme.

The Circumvesuviana local railway connects Naples with Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento cheaply and frequently. It is not comfortable and it is a known spot for pickpockets, but it is genuinely the practical way to reach Pompeii without a car or a tour.

For the coast road, take a driver or a ferry rather than a hire car unless you are a confident driver. It is narrow, winding and busy, and parking at the villages is scarce and expensive.

Entry requirements for UK travellers

Checked against GOV.UK foreign travel advice on 17 September 2026.

Italy is in the Schengen area, so British passport holders need no visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years of your arrival date and be valid at least three months after you leave.

The EU’s biometric Entry/Exit System is rolling out, replacing passport stamps with fingerprints and a photograph on your first crossing. It is free, lasts three years and speeds up later trips. ETIAS is not currently required.

Practicalities worth knowing

Naples has a reputation and part of it is earned. Petty theft is common in the station area and on the Circumvesuviana. Keep bags closed and in front of you, do not wear obvious jewellery, and you will almost certainly have no trouble.

The city tourist tax is charged per person per night at the hotel and is not included in the package price.

Vesuvius closes in bad weather, more often in winter than people expect, and the decision is made on the day.

Pompeii is exposed and enormous. Take water, a hat and proper shoes in summer, and waterproofs in winter — there is very little shelter and very little shade.

Eat the pizza where the locals queue. Naples’ best pizzerias are cheap, plain and often have a wait. The queue is the signal.

Coffee is drunk standing up, quickly, at the bar, and costs a fraction of what it does at a table. Sitting down carries a service charge almost everywhere, which is legitimate rather than a scam, but it is worth knowing before you order.

Sunday and lunchtime closures are more thorough than in northern Italy. Many kitchens shut between three and seven, and smaller shops close entirely on Sundays. Build the day around a long lunch rather than around errands.

Booking and protection

Your booking is covered by our ATOL licence 10713 and we hold IATA accreditation 91285611. It is held with a deposit of £99 per person, with the balance due before travel.

Prices are per person, based on two people sharing — the lowest lead-in in our Italian range. May and September are the months we would steer you to, because they are the ones where the Amalfi Coast is actually open.

Frequently asked questions

From £249 per person, reduced from £320, for four nights at the Palazzo Alabardieri or similar 4★ in Naples with return London flights. January is cheapest and July dearest. Excursions to the coast are not included.

Largely not. The coast runs on a season — ferries are reduced or suspended and many coastal hotels, restaurants and beach clubs close entirely. Naples itself stays fully open. Tell us your dates and we will confirm what is actually running before you book.

May or September, both close behind. The coast is fully open, the weather is warm and the price sits well below July. September has the warmer sea of the two; May has the fresher landscape before the summer heat.

As a Naples and Pompeii trip, yes — the city, the archaeological museum and the ruins all operate year-round and are far quieter. As an Amalfi Coast holiday, no. Treat the cheapest month as a city break with a scenic drive rather than a coastal one.

The Palazzo Alabardieri or similar 4★ in Naples. Where a package says "or similar" we confirm the actual property in writing before you pay. Basing yourself in Sorrento or on the coast instead is quoted separately.

Your meal arrangement is confirmed in writing before you pay, so there is no ambiguity about what is covered. If you would prefer half board or all-inclusive, tell us when you enquire and we will price it against your dates.

No. Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, Capri and the Amalfi Coast are all excursions and none is included in the package price. We can arrange guided visits, or you can reach Pompeii independently on the local railway.

The Circumvesuviana local railway connects Naples with Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento cheaply and frequently. It is not comfortable and it is a known spot for pickpockets, but it is the practical way without a car or a tour.

Most of a day. It is a whole Roman town rather than a ruin and it is larger than almost anyone expects. Herculaneum nearby is smaller, better preserved and far quieter, and is worth considering if you have seen Pompeii before.

Yes, to the crater rim — there is a road most of the way and a walk at the top. It closes in bad weather, more often in winter than people expect, and the decision is made on the day rather than in advance.

It has a reputation and part of it is earned. Petty theft is common around the station and on the Circumvesuviana. Keep bags closed and in front of you and skip the obvious jewellery, and you will almost certainly have no trouble.

Not unless you are a confident driver. The Amalfi coast road is narrow, winding and busy, and parking at the villages is scarce and expensive. A private driver or the ferry in season is the civilised way to do it, and we can arrange either.

In season, yes — it is a ferry ride from Naples or Sorrento. Out of season it is largely shut and the ferries thin out, so it is not a winter day trip. It is busy at the height of summer and better early or late in the day.

More than visitors expect. The National Archaeological Museum holds the finds taken off site at Pompeii, including the mosaics and frescoes. The historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And the pizza is genuinely different here — this is where it was invented.

It covers Naples and Pompeii comfortably, or Naples and one coastal day. It is not enough for Pompeii, Vesuvius, Capri and the coast together. Extra nights are priced on request and this itinerary rewards them more than most.

No. Italy is in the Schengen area and British passport holders can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Your passport must have been issued within the last 10 years of your arrival date and be valid three months after you leave. Checked against GOV.UK on 17 September 2026.

Yes. Italy charges a city tourist tax per person per night, payable at the hotel rather than included in the package price. It is a small nightly amount and it is not optional.

No. Naples airport is close to the city centre though, so this is one of the shorter transfers in our Italian programme. We can add a private transfer to your booking if you would rather not sort it on arrival.

It is very hot, the coast is at peak crowds, and many Neapolitan businesses close for the Italian holidays. At £339 it is also near the top of the range. May or September are better in every respect.

Completely different trips. Naples is archaeology, food and a city with an edge,. Our Rome and Florence twin-city break is art and monuments in two polished historic centres. Naples is cheaper and rougher; the choice is about temperament.

Ninety-nine pounds per person, with the balance due before travel. The holiday is ATOL 10713 protected and we hold IATA accreditation 91285611. Prices are per person, based on two people sharing.

May and September are the months where the coast is open and the price is low, and they move fastest. Prefer a Sorrento or coastal base rather than Naples? Book earlier still — there are far fewer of those rooms than there are in the city.
